The test is 60 minutes long, there are always two sections (or ‘Tasks’):

Task Two
In Task Two you are asked to write approximately 250 words in 40 minutes. You will be asked to write a short essay that expresses your opinion on a issue, or shows how to solve a problem, or requires you to speculate about future trends. Again, like the Reading Module, the topics you are given are ‘General Interest’ meaning that even if the question is related to a specific area of knowledge (e.g. science) you do not need specialist scientific knowledge to write about it.

Task Two is more important than Task One in that there is more ‘weighting’ towards Task Two. If your performance in Task One is not as good as it is in Task Two, you can still receive a good writing score.

Assessment

Your writing is marked by a native English speaker who trained in assessment of IELTS writing tasks. Traditionally, scores were full bands only (i.e. Writing Band 6, etc.), but recently, half bands were introduced. It is now therefore possible to get a score of 5.5, 6.5, etc. for your writing score.

The GMAT or the Graduate Management Admission Test consists of a quantitative section. There are problems based on problem solving and data sufficiency. Each section has to be tackled by a different strategy.

1.       Core Basics 

• The verbal and analytical reading section  does not require writing or scrap paper while the quantitative section requires paper and your scribbling skills.
• In the this section you will not need the keyboard at your assigned computer. You must  not use your scrap paper for every single question, because the more calculations you do mentally the less time will be spent on the paper.
• The questions are usually deceptive which appear very simple at the first glance.
• However, you shouldn’t find yourself struggling with complex computations because the GMAT will only test you on high school math concepts.

2.        Finding the Answer

• There will mostly always be a choice that is a wrong answer caused from a common computational error. Many students will choose this wrong answer if they hurriedly answer it, don’t check their sentence formation or don’t carefully read the question.
• When preparing for the quantitative section, practice finding not only the correct answer while solving a question, but do try identifying the most appropriate answer.

3.       Exercise Your Math Mind

• The questions will be asked in an unpredictable order.
• You can’t skip any questions from both the types.

6.       Practise

• Spend adequate time on the first five questions.
• Preparation should be such that all the questions should be finished at all costs.
• Don’t waste time by revisiting the help screen or requesting extra scrap paper. Better practice helps in avoiding such situations and proper time management can be acheieved.
• Try simulating the actual test environment and refrain from taking food breaks until you complete a section.

Remember

• You have to fill in every question with an answer or else you will be penalized. If you’re absolutely not sure of a question, eliminate answer choices that you know are wrong and then guess. Even if you have one minute left on the test and five or six unanswered questions, you should still fill them in with some answer choice.

What should be the best strategy? Best strategy is quite simple, you should not make blind guess at all. For the questions, about which you do not know anything, the best way is to skip those. Attempting such questions may result in deduction of your marks. However about the questions which are familiar to you but you are not sure about the answer between the two options than you can attempt such questions. For example, if there are five answer options given for a question and you are sure that three of them are wrong and of the remaining two, one is the correct answer. You can always attempt such questions as overall probability will always remain high, for getting additional marks. Because even if you get 40% of these questions as correct you will end up getting crucial extra marks.
